Mastering Your Short-Form Video Strategy

Posted on April 3, 2024

In the fast-paced realm of social media, short-form videos have emerged as a powerhouse for businesses to connect with their audience authentically and effectively. Recently, I had the privilege of attending a conference centered around short-form video strategy, where industry experts shared invaluable insights on leveraging platforms like Reels and TikTok to their fullest potential. Here, I’ll dive into some takeaways and wisdom from the conference and the extraordinary Jera Bean, encapsulated into actionable strategies for businesses aiming to thrive in the digital landscape.

Letting Go: Embracing Authenticity and Connection

There was so much emphasis on the importance of letting go of traditional notions and embracing authenticity. Gone are the days of solely chasing trends and crafting content with the sole purpose of going viral. Instead, businesses are encouraged to embody five guiding words as they create their vision: Authentic, Playful, Valuable, Casual, and Responsive.

  1. Authenticity: Inject your personality and originality into your content. People connect with realness, so don’t shy away from showcasing your brand’s unique voice. People to people. Always keep this in mind.

  1. Playfulness: Incorporate humor and light-heartedness into your videos. Remember not to take yourself too seriously; authenticity thrives in a playful atmosphere and allows people to see who you really are as a person or a brand.

  1. Value: Offer valuable insights, knowledge, and entertainment to your audience. Whether it’s how-to guides, tips, or commentary on industry trends, ensure your content adds value to the viewer’s experience.

  1. Casual: Be approachable and friendly in your plan of attack. Create a space where viewers feel comfortable engaging with your content.

  1. Responsive: Utilize features like duets and video replies or replies in general to engage with your audience actively. Foster a sense of community by acknowledging and responding to your viewers so they feel seen and heard by you. (For a business or company specific page this is 10x more important because consumers don’t associate you with an actual human being at first glance. Remind them there is a person behind it all).

Pillars of Short-Form Video Strategy

In the dynamic landscape of short-form video content, mastering a strategic approach is key to standing out amidst the digital noise. This entails understanding and implementing three fundamental pillars: Your Expertise, The Secret Sauce, and The Business Side.

  1. Expertise: Establish trust with your audience by showcasing your expertise. Provide how-to guides, tutorials, and insightful commentary on relevant topics within your industry. Make your expertise content both specific and digestible for maximum impact.

  1. Secret Sauce:  the concept of the “secret sauce” serves as a potent tool for humanizing your brand and fostering genuine connections with your audience. This approach recognizes that beyond the surface-level content, audiences crave authenticity and relatability from the brands they engage with. The “secret sauce” is comprised of four distinct quadrants, each offering a unique lens through which to showcase your brand’s identity:
  • Foundation: This quadrant delves into the roots of your brand, encompassing its history, journey, and core values. Sharing stories of your brand’s humble beginnings, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the milestones you’ve achieved can evoke a sense of authenticity and transparency. By revealing the foundational aspects of your brand, you humanize it, allowing your audience to connect with the genuine narrative behind your business.
  • Professional: Here, the focus shifts to the present state of your business or brand. Highlighting your professional accomplishments, industry expertise, and the quality of your products or services establishes credibility and trust with your audience. Whether showcasing successful projects, client testimonials, or industry accolades, this quadrant reinforces your brand’s authority and competence in your respective field.
  • Personal: Contrary to the professional quadrant, the personal quadrant invites viewers to connect with the human side of your brand. This segment showcases the individuals behind the business, including founders, employees, or brand ambassadors. Sharing glimpses of your team’s personalities, hobbies, and day-to-day activities fosters a sense of familiarity and relatability. In doing this, you deepen the emotional connection with your audience, transcending the transactional nature of business.
  • Light-hearted: Finally, the light-hearted quadrant adds a touch of playfulness and authenticity to your brand’s identity. Here, the focus is on infusing humor, spontaneity, and casualness into your content. From behind-the-scenes bloopers to playful challenges and relatable memes, this quadrant allows your brand to showcase its fun-loving side. By embracing this, you create an inviting and engaging atmosphere that resonates with your audience on a more emotional level.

Incorporating these four quadrants into your short-form video content strategy allows you to present a multifaceted portrayal of your brand. In doing this, you forge deeper connections with your audience, ultimately driving loyalty, engagement, and brand affinity.

  1. Business: Drive conversions by strategically promoting your products or services. Employ both hard sell and soft sell techniques, depending on the context. Ensure clear and direct calls to action (CTAs) for hard sells, while soft sells focus on subtly showcasing the value of your offerings.

Example: At Valiant 3 Communications, we could “hard sell” by putting a video out announcing a new client discount. “Clients who sign up for social media marketing this month will receive an extra $1,000 of free ad spend.” Whereas a soft sell might be us showing a highlight reel of the successful golf outing we just wrapped for the Bus Stops Here Foundation where we raised a record amount for the nonprofit. If you’re a nonprofit, you may see the successful event and think “hey, I’d love to have Valiant run our next golf outing”.

Connecting with Purpose

Every piece of content shared on short-form video platforms serves as a direct entry point into your brand and, consequently, your business. Align your content with your larger business goals and optimize for audience retention. Remember, short-form video content remains the number one way to expand your reach and connect with new audiences on social media platforms.

As you can see, mastering short-form video strategy requires a delicate balance of authenticity, value, and strategic promotion. By letting go of outdated practices and embracing the guiding principles outlined in this blog, businesses can unlock the full potential of platforms like Reels and TikTok to forge meaningful connections with their audience and drive tangible results. 3, 2, 1….GO!
